Liu Yang is the first female astronaut in China and one of the few women astronauts in the world. She was born on March 21, 1980, in Zhejiang, China. Her parents were both scientists who encouraged her to pursue science and technology.

In 2003, Liu graduated from Tsinghua University with a degree in physics and mathematics. In 2007, she joined the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a researcher at the Institute of Space Science in Beijing. On September 25, 2011, Liu was selected as one of the three candidates for China's manned spaceflight program. She underwent rigorous training and passed all the tests required for the mission. On June 16, 2013, Liu became the first Chinese woman astronaut when she boarded Shenzhou X spacecraft and became the second person in the world to fly in space without a male companion.

During her time in space, Liu conducted several experiments and took several photos. She also communicated with Earth via video link with fellow crew members. After returning to Earth, Liu continued her work as a scientist and researcher.
