Mário began his career with Benfica in 1977 when he signed from Boavista. During this period, Mário played in all three divisions of Portuguese football, including the top-flight Liga Nacional.

One of the highlights of Mário's time at Benfica was his role in the team that won the UEFA Cup in 1985.
